What This Sales Tax Calculator Does

A sales tax calculator finds the tax and total price for any purchase based on your state's combined rate: multiply the price by the rate ÷ 100. For example, the average combined sales tax in Texas is 8.20%, so $100 becomes $108.20 — $8.20 in tax.

Combined state and local rates vary widely — from 0% in five states to over 9.5% in Louisiana and Tennessee, according to the Tax Foundation's 2026 state and local sales tax data.

Once you know the tax, pair it with a live deal on today's deals so the sticker price isn't where you start.

How to Use the Sales Tax Calculator

  1. Enter the pre-tax price in the Price field, or for reverse mode the total you paid.
  2. Pick your state from the dropdown — the average combined rate fills in automatically, or type your exact local rate in the advanced override.
  3. Read the sales tax and total, which update instantly as you type or change states.

Sales Tax Formula (Forward and Reverse)

Sales Tax = Price × (Rate ÷ 100)
Total = Price + Sales Tax
Reverse: Pre-tax Price = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
Reverse: Tax = Total − Pre-tax Price

For reverse sales tax you divide by (1 + rate), not multiply by (1 − rate), because the tax was added on top of the pre-tax amount — the total is already 100% of the price plus the tax percentage, so dividing reverses that addition exactly.

Worked Example — Reverse Sales Tax

Your receipt total is $53.50 and the local rate is 7%. Divide $53.50 by 1.07 to get $50.00 pre-tax, then subtract: $53.50 − $50.00 = $3.50 in sales tax. Same math works for any total: a $214 hotel bill at 7% comes from a $200 room plus $14 tax. The sales tax calculator above does this instantly for any state — switch to Reverse mode, type the total, and read the pre-tax price.

Sales Tax on Cars and Vehicles

Vehicle sales tax is calculated the same way as any other purchase — price times the rate — so this sales tax calculator works as a vehicle sales tax calculator too: enter the purchase price minus any trade-in credit and pick the state. In most states the taxable amount is the purchase price minus your trade-in credit, which can save hundreds.

A few state-specific notes from the most-searched vehicle tax questions:

  • Florida: car sales tax is 6% state plus county discretionary surtax (capped at the first $5,000) for around 7% effective.
  • Texas: the motor vehicle tax is a flat 6.25% on the sales price minus trade-in.
  • Arkansas: vehicle sales tax is 6.5% state plus local rates, but the state portion is waived if the vehicle costs under $4,000.
  • Missouri: the state rate is 4.225% plus local, and yes — you can finance sales tax on a car in Missouri by rolling it into your auto loan.
  • Tennessee: car sales tax is 7% state plus up to 2.75% local on the first $1,600, plus 9.75% above that.

Before you sign, compare auto insurance quotes so the total cost of ownership doesn't catch you off guard.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate sales tax backwards from a total?

1 simple step: divide the total by (1 + the tax rate as a decimal) to get the pre-tax price, then subtract that from the total to get the tax. For a $107 receipt at 7%, divide $107 by 1.07 to get $100 pre-tax, then $107 − $100 = $7 in sales tax.

What is the car sales tax in Florida?

6% state sales tax, plus a county discretionary surtax of 0.5% to 1.5% on the first $5,000 of the vehicle's price. The effective rate is typically around 7%, so a $25,000 car carries roughly $1,575 in sales tax depending on the county.

How much is auto sales tax in Florida?

6% statewide plus up to 1.5% county surtax on the first $5,000, for an effective rate near 7% on most vehicles. On a $30,000 car that comes to about $1,875 in total sales tax before any trade-in credit is applied.

How much is sales tax on a car in Missouri?

4.225% state sales tax plus local taxes that average around 4%, for a combined rate near 8.39% on the purchase price minus any trade-in. On a $20,000 vehicle with no trade-in, expect roughly $1,678 in total sales tax.

How do I calculate vehicle sales tax?

3 steps: take the purchase price, subtract any trade-in credit if your state allows it, then multiply by your combined state plus local sales tax rate divided by 100. For a $25,000 car with a $5,000 trade-in in a state with an 8% rate: ($25,000 − $5,000) × 0.08 = $1,600 in vehicle sales tax.

What is the sales tax in Fresno, California?

8.35% combined — that's 7.25% California state sales tax plus 1.10% local district tax for the City of Fresno. So a $100 purchase carries $8.35 in sales tax for a total of $108.35.

Can you finance sales tax on a car in Missouri?

Yes — Missouri lets you roll the sales tax into your auto loan rather than paying it up front to the Department of Revenue. You'll still owe the tax within 30 days of purchase, but financing through the lender means it's bundled into your monthly payment alongside the vehicle price.

How is sales tax calculated in Excel?

1 formula: if A1 is the price and B1 is the rate as a percentage, use =A1*B1/100 for the tax and =A1*(1+B1/100) for the total. For reverse sales tax from a total in A1 at rate B1, use =A1/(1+B1/100) to get the pre-tax price.
