Founded in 1958 by retired educator Ethel Percy Andrus and Leonard Davis, AARP grew out of Andrus's 1947 National Retired Teachers Association and merged with the NRTA in 1982. Once called the American Association of Retired Persons, the group shortened its name to simply 'AARP' in 1999 to reflect that membership isn't limited to retirees. From its Washington, D.C. headquarters, it advocates on issues such as Medicare and Social Security while publishing AARP Magazine and the AARP Bulletin. Members also unlock discounts and deals spanning travel, restaurants, prescriptions, and insurance products.
