Alibaba launched it in 2010 as the consumer-facing counterpart to Alibaba.com, which handles bulk B2B trade rather than individual retail orders. Where Alibaba.com is built for businesses ordering in wholesale quantities, AliExpress lets individual shoppers buy single items — electronics, apparel, home goods — often shipped straight from the manufacturer at lower prices than domestic retail. It's grown into one of the most-used international shopping platforms in the world, including being the top e-commerce destination in markets like Russia, and it operates under the same parent company, Alibaba Group, that Jack Ma and 17 co-founders started in Hangzhou in 1999.
