Credited with pioneering 'retail-tainment,' the chain swelled to more than 600 stores across 10-plus countries by 1997 and peaked at 747 locations in 1999. Its shelves stocked Disney-branded apparel, plush, toys, home goods, and collectibles, sometimes including park-exclusive merchandise you couldn't find elsewhere. Ownership shifted repeatedly over the years — 313 North American stores went to Children's Place in 2004, and Disney bought 225 of them back in 2008. In August 2021, Disney announced the closure of all remaining US and Canada locations by mid-September, pivoting to shopDisney.com and shop-in-shop displays at Target, though a few outlet-mall stores still keep the lights on.
