The story began when Nancy and Walter Katin sewed heavy-duty canvas boat covers as 'Kanvas by Katin' — until a local surfer asked Walter to build him a pair of board shorts that could take a beating. Word of their toughness traveled fast through the lineup, and by the 1960s legends like Gerry Lopez, Eddie Aikau, Wayne Bartholomew, and Peter Townend were riding in Katin trunks. After Walter passed in 1967, Nancy kept the company going until 1986, when she left it to her longtime seamstress, Sato Hughes, whose family still runs the original Surfside shop today. That same obsession with durability carries through the full lineup of boardshorts, tees, hats, and more.
