The company traces back to 1935, when it grew out of Samuel Blanc’s 1933 invention of the world’s first electromechanical sewer and drain cleaning machine—a device that cleared tree roots and sewer-line blockages without tearing up a yard. Blanc followed it in 1939 with a compact version built for household sink, bathroom, kitchen and laundry drains. The Blanc family sold the business in 1980 to Cincinnati-based Chemed Corporation, which grew it into today’s network of company-owned and franchise locations. Now headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, Roto-Rooter handles residential and commercial drain cleaning, plumbing repair and water damage cleanup.
