The company traces back to 1953, when Charles Ferguson, Ralph Lenz, and Johnny Smither pooled $165,000 in capital to launch it in Newport News, Virginia. By the 1980s it had become the country's largest wholesale plumbing distributor, prompting UK conglomerate Wolseley plc to acquire it in 1982; a 1999 merger with Los Angeles-based Familian Corporation extended its West Coast reach. Ferguson relocated its parent company's domicile to the US in August 2024, though its headquarters have never left Newport News. Through FergusonHome.com, that wholesale heritage now backs a retail catalog of plumbing fixtures aimed at both DIY homeowners and working contractors.
