The company traces its roots to 1935, when it was founded as Citizens Utilities Company in Minneapolis to bring service to rural communities. It broadened its telephone network through the 1993 acquisition of GTE's telephone properties in several states, moved into DSL broadband in the early-to-mid 2000s, and adopted the Frontier Communications name in 2008 after rebranding from Citizens Communications in 2000. Today it serves roughly 3.2 million subscribers and positions itself as the largest pure-play fiber broadband provider in the United States.
